Exeter

The Exeter meeting took place on Thursday 27 October. For the meetings findings, comments and questions download the full meeting report.

Around 145,000 people live in the Exeter area, compared to the Devon average of around 22,000*

The Exeter area covers Exminster as well as 25 other surrounding parishes. There are around six times as many people living in the area compared to the Devon average. The proportion of people aged 65 and over is very low and the percentage of people aged 15 and under is slightly lower than the Devon average. House prices are lower and unemployment levels are a little higher than the Devon average.

86% of you told us in the National Place Survey you were happy with the area as a place to live, although the following issues concern you:

  • Road repairs
  • Congestion
  • Activities for teenagers

Investing in the Exeter area
We are continuing to invest in your community.

  • Over £3 million is being spent on local roads
  • Over £11 million is being spent on projects in local colleges, schools, youth centres or other services relating to children and families
  • An extra £9 million has been agreed to support highway maintenance on Devon’s roads
  • Growth planned for the East of Exeter area has the potential to create over 10,000 jobs, offering significant skilled employment opportunities for future generations
  • County Councillors have each been allocated a fund, which can be used to improve their local areas, support valuable community work and encourage partnership
  • Businesses and communities will benefit from faster broadband, following a successful bid from Devon and Somerset County Councils for government funding. This will provide a much-needed boost to the local economy.

Tell us what your local priorities and issues are, or share with us an innovative way your community has helped itself

  1. Do not cut the libraries any more. At present the service is getting worse due to the cuts already made. it is no good saying that you haven’t closed any libraries, when you have cut the staff so much that they are unable to provide the high standard of service we have got used to in Exeter.

  2. Saving by removing bus passes would probably create
discrimination, hardship, healthcare problems, increased loneliness for pensioners, job losses. An almost empty bus passes me every 15 minutes. Transport company needs motivation to seek savings and profitability instead of its reliance on council funding. Gets some alternative quotes perhaps.

The high street pedestrian volume, coupled with commercial transport has certainly reached Health and Safety hazard levels. HSE requires adequate separation of vehicles and pedestrians. As a retired company H/S auditor, I would say that this hazard needs assessment review, urgently.

Have your say
