Proposal Details: To open a community hub in South Devon for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, questioning and intersex (LGBTQI) people, their friends, families and supporters. A place for LGBTQI people to meet up and be befriended. Fully accessible venue for existing social group, film nights, family group, older persons group, training and therapeutic support group. The hub will also house a comprehensive youth provision. It will also act as a working space for Proud2Be staff, committee, volunteers and guests. LGBTQI Drop-In, to support people, some of whom may be in crisis. Create employment and volunteering opportunities for local LGBTQI people. Information point and LGBTQI library, cafe & kitchen, garden area, workshop & therapy room, meeting/training room, counselling/therapy room. The hub would be a long term project, set it up and make it sustainable as a long term LGBTQI facility. In our new hub we propose to continue our social group which offers a safe space for LGBT people to build up their social and support networks. This will help combat rural isolation and encourage growth of self confidence and interpersonal skills which in turn will make them more likely contribute to life in the wider community. This grant will enable Proud2Be to alleviate social isolation that many LGBTQI people face in rural Devon, including susceptibility to victimisation and discrimination. We will: • Increase positive visibility • Develop social networks • Develop informal and formal support networks • Enhance individual and community positive self image, self reliance and emotional wellbeing • Increase awareness of LGBTQI issues within the wider community • Establish a community engagement plan to ensure LGBTQI people’s voice, views, experiences and recommendations influence strategic plans of wider services In our new Hub, we would be working towards financial sustainability, eg. through a community cafe, hiring out workspaces and/or therapy rooms at a reasonable cost. We are in the process of completing an application form for The Big Lottery Reaching Communities grant which if successful will cover start up costs, wages, equipment, venue hire and costs etc.
